I think it would be good to turn this verse around. I don’t think the statement here is supposed to be a good thing. It seems to be saying that it is hard to get forgiveness. We understand that.
Today this reminds me that it should not be. There is little you can do about the lack of forgiveness in the other person. What if you are the wronged one who will not forgive? You may have been clearly offended. You may have been in the right. Now you must be willing to forgive.
It is important. Remember the words of Jesus.
(Matthew 6:14-15 KJV) For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
So? Forgive; don’t hide in your virtuous strong city. There is more at stake than your pride.

Depending on a person's personallity and closeness to the Lord, it seems to me like most folks get better at this as they get older.
The key is the first part of your comment. Personality can make it less of a struggle while walking close to the Lord helps us to see more clearly.
And I would agree that I hope I am getter better at it as I get older.
