Mock Deception
(Proverbs 20:1 KJV) Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
How do you know Godly character when you see it? Sometimes it is marked by the positive traits, sometimes by the negative. “Mocker” (3917b) is one of the negatives. By my count it is used 19 times in Proverbs out of 27 times in the entire Old Testament. That tells me it is an important concept. It is one to be avoided.
It’s most common translation is “scoffer.” When I look at the definition I see that it is one who talks arrogantly. Here the implication is that wine can be a catalyst for such sinful behavior.
So? Some things can be avoided. Wine is something that tends to lower your discernment and self control. Draw your own conclusions.

That was one of my grandfather's favorite verses. I used to quote Proverbs 31:7 just to make him think for another scripture. Too many ARE under the control of alcohol, though, instead of the other way around.
Moderation and balance are always the hardest roads to walk. It is much easier to be a legalist or a hedonist.
The standard on things like this is still moderation.
Grace and peace.
