Watch the High Fives

(Proverbs 17:18 KJV)  A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.

Here we are told it is stupid to give “surety” (6161).  This is not the common word but it is a common idea.  Why use a different word to express an often repeated idea?  I have to guess.  The KJV translation gives us a clue in inferring that it is a pledge given by quick shake of the hands.  The KJV is even more appropriate today with the “high five” and the “fist bump” replacing the shaking of hands.

This reference is a warning about the quick support we give a “friend” (neighbor NASB) (7453).  We are quick to agree because we know the person.  Because of that we don’t think about the consequences.  Proverbs frequently warns about going into debt.  This is a way that it can sneak up on you because of the irresponsible behavior of others.  You end up suffering for their failures.

So?  Your word should be your bond.  Be careful where you give it.
