(Proverbs 12:26 KJV) The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.
Both NASB and KJV give unusual translations in this verse, searching for the right word. The KJV uses “more excellent” (8446) and the NASB talks about being a “guide”. Both are reaching for the idea of searching for the right way of living. The root of the word means to spy or search out. It means that we are to set an example by our search for excellence and righteousness.
You will note that the “wicked” (7563) is also setting an example but the standard is different. People are surrounded by role models who begin with certain assumptions. Think about the direction that TV programs are pushing. Think of the morals of your favorite TV character. If you know anything about the Bible and God’s expectations you should see some immediate contrasts to how we are expected to live.
So? People are watching. You are setting an example. If you neighbor follows your example is he more likely to end up in heaven or hell?
