(Proverbs 6:28 KJV) Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
One of my students was complaining that the room was hot. My smart mouth reply was that it was because I was so “hot”. We have adopted the idea of “hot” as being really sexually attractive. We seem to think this is a good thing. This verse and the previous one are trying to remind us that hot can destroy. It can blister. It can kill.
I have seen video of “holy men” in India who theoretically walk on hot coals with their bare feet and are not injured. I have heard various ways it is explained from the spiritual to secret coatings. I don’t know enough to make a judgement but I know that if I did it I might not ever walk again. Just because someone else gets away with something doesn’t mean I will. Just because I got away with something yesterday doesn’t mean the seeds of destruction were not planted. One day in the coals leads to scorching. Two days might lead to crippling. Three days might lead to death.
So? We are quite capable of avoiding most destructive behavior. We are not Teflon coated. We are Spirit filled. Live like it.
