(Proverbs 26:2 KJV) As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.
A “curse” (7045) can be much more than a pin in a voodoo doll or a chant over a lock of hair. I don’t know if I have ever run into that form but there is a more regular encounter that we all face. The definition of this Hebrew word goes beyond curse and includes vilification and execration. In my computer dictionary vilification is defined as “speak or write about in an abusively disparaging manner. Execration is to “feel or express great loathing for”. I think this is getting closer to home.
We have all been abused verbally. Somewhere someone has told you they hate you. It is possible that the attack is deserved. I always need to keep that in mind instead of getting all self righteous and haughty. There are times when God is using this kind of pain to take the wind out of our sails. Again, it is possible I deserve it and if I want to grow and remain healthy that must be seriously considered.
It is also possible that it is not deserved. It could be the person going for your jugular is just trying to manipulate you. It is possible they are just having a bad day. It could be they are taking out on you what someone else deserves.
So? I need to prayerfully consider what seem to be attacks on my character and personality. This is where the Holy Spirit as exhorter is so helpful. He can help us see clearly and either bring repentance or resistance.
