Locusts and Salvation

(Proverbs 30:27 KJV)  The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;

This is an ideal verse for a preacher to use to reinforce what he already wants to say.  I experienced this last Sunday.  The text was about the ascension of Jesus and the key point was the promise of the return.  It was the final sermon of a series started at Easter and looking at the resurrection.  There are a lot of important things to be taught from that context but somehow the sermon came out the way I think it always did, “Jesus could come at any moment.  Are you ready?” 

In the same way I would use this verse to talk about the unity of the Spirit and the community of believers.  The church does not need an earthly leader, we have a heavenly king.  We should not need a bunch of rules and drill sergeants giving orders.  Between the ability to read the word ourselves and the inner guidance of the Holy Spirit we should be able to work together and walk together.  We should be able to be as organized as locusts.

So?  I don’t see that happening.  One key difference is that we are created in the image of God and the locusts are not.  We have individual responsibility and the locusts do not.  We are creative and locusts are not.  We sin and locusts do not.  Which would bring the preacher from Sunday back to an altar call and invitation.  Jesus is coming.  Are you ready?
