(Proverbs 27:26 KJV) The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.
Animal lovers pay attention. Animals are not our brothers, they are our resources. Here we see clothing and profit. In the next verse we see milk. Other places we see concepts of “the fatted ox” and of course there were the sacrifices in the temple. It is true that the peasants of that day my have had the cow sleep in the house but that was more a poverty issue than a desire for companionship. Many cultures thought dogs were edible and also horses. Cats didn’t seem to have any use. It has nothing to do with anything but I can’t find cats mentioned anywhere in the Bible.
So? Pets can be companionship. In another context they might be a coat. Either way they are still animals. Sorry about that. Don’t tell my wife.

AGREED! Although I'm an animal lover of sorts (former farmer, horseman, dog-lover, etc.), I have to admit that many critters taste delicious, probably most if prepared properly. That's why I cringe at the idea of people eating horses, but won't condemn those who do. The Hindu's worship cows and we make fun of them, then we turn around and worship dogs and cats and such. Common sense needs to prevail. Animal abuse is another matter, of course.
There is another verse in Proverbs that deals with abusing animals.
Grace and peace
