(Pro 16:26 KJV) He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him.
I just finished reading a book by Thomas Sowell called Migrations and Culture. He traces a number of groups that have been involved in migrations over hundreds of years and around the world. He notes that when they first arrive in a new land they are destitute and often without any useful skills. Then an interesting thing happens. In every country down through history they move up the ladder and become prosperous. They surpass the locals. Why? Because they were willing to work hard.
In our affluent age we have forgotten the value of being in want. I think of times when I knew that we were almost on the street but my kids never understood that. They assumed that Dad and Mom would provide. And providentially, we did. We had help but the most important action was the second, and a few times third, jobs that kept the budget in the black.
So? We must be willing to work. Grace is wonderful for the forgiveness that we cannot earn but there comes a point where the saved soul is expected to get in gear.
