The Oasis

(Psa 63:1 KJV)  A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah. O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

(Proverbs 24 also read)

This is a great reminder about the need for worship and starting our day with worship.  You could take this “early” as referring to when you’re young.  I personally like the idea of reminding us it’s not a bad discipline to get up out of bed to spend time with the Lord.

And look at the world that is being described here.  I don’t think the literal picture of no water is the point.  I think that is a literary device to remind us that we live in a world that is dry of spiritual sustenance.  It could be food, air, shelter, or anything else is necessary for life.  Here though the illustration is water.

It reminds me of the comment by Pascal that there is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man.  That vacuum can only be filled by God.  So we live in a world where there is great thirst.  We live in an environment that is missing a necessary ingredient for survival.  That ingredient is the refreshing touch of Almighty God.

So?  Maybe you are someone who comes with your own canteen.  Maybe you have a whale in your backyard.  The point is that you need constant refreshment from the living God.  Don’t get cocky.
